baa baa black sheep
First illustration of the semester. For this assignment we re-interpreted a nursery rhyme. I chose "Baa Baa Black Sheep".
baa baa black sheep / have you any wool? / yes sir yes sir / three bags full
one for the master / and one for the dame / and one for the little boy / who lives down the lane
The history of the "Baa Baa Black Sheep" nursery rhyme refers to an export tax that allowed the king (Edward I) to collect tax on wool exported from the country. "The little boy who lives in the lane" refers to the common people, "the master" refers to the King, and "the dame" is the wealthy nobility. The rhyme is viewed as a complaint against oppression. When I learned who the different characters represented, I thought of bringing it into contemporary times, with "the master" symbolizing corporations, and "the little boy" symbolizing everyday working people.
I'm working on developing more editorial pieces for my portfolio, and also some more lino-cut pieces.

resurfacing
Some more sketches for the alphabet I'm working on. The linework seems to be morphing slightly as I go along.
And here are some roosters just because. May or may not be influenced by the roosters and chickens running around one of the hotels I stayed at over the summer.

Developed a sketch from a few months ago into a print. This drawing is from a series of sketches I did along with this work.
Some process shots while carving the lino. I find the carving process pretty relaxing, even tho it is kinda labor intensive.
