The Moon

Finished The Moon Tarot card. This will be one of a series at my art show, opening February 29 at Aperture coffee shop. I did the head and body separately, so I could carve the head easier.

The Moon has to do with mystery, deep instincts and imagination. It also signifies dreams, myths and fantasies. The traditional Tarot card features a dog and a wolf on it, so I chose to stay with the wolf imagery, but instead create an anthropormorphic figure, symbolizing the wildness within ourselves, that sometimes comes out during the full moon.

Just a rough sketch this week. I am working on some new Tarot cards for an upcoming art show. My art show will be opening on February 29 at Aperture coffee shop in Vancouver (Broadway and Alberta). It will be on for one month. This sketch is for The Moon.

Sabriel cover

Starting to work on book covers as self promotion to send to local book publishers. This cover is for Sabriel by Garth Nix. I was trying to capture the monster of Kerrigor with rough brayer strokes to create an uneven black shape.

brush lettering

Playing around with brush lettering this week. It's pretty fun and not too difficult to do. I found some tutorials on youtube that I have been watching. I use a portable water brush and watercolors to create my brush lettering. Some of the tutorials I watched use a brush marker pen, but I like the variation in color that you get with the watercolor.

Animal Rights

This is my second illustration I have done for The Progressive. The article was on animal protection rights, and cited several current animal rights events, for example the shooting of Cecil the lion. Another example was circus elephants, and the use of bull hooks to control them. This is what I chose to highlight in this illustration. The art director wanted the fragility of the animals to come through, so I chose to frame the elephant in flowers. The plant climbs up the bull hook, reclaiming it in a nonviolent manner.

This will be my last post of the year, taking a little break for the rest of the month. See you in January!

The plant was done in ink, so I could get more detail into it. I added texture digitally so it would fit in with the rest of the piece.

Me & Monty logo

This is a logo I worked on for a Dog Spa Products company called Me & Monty. It was a lot of fun to work on, I got to draw the client's cute little dog. I enjoyed doing the hand lettering as well, I think it works really well with the brand.
